River Mur Cycling Trail

The River Mur accompanies you for 450 kilometres; from its source in the Hohe Tauern National Park to the vines and thermal springs of the spas in the south. Mountain pastures, meadows, magical little villages, wine routes and even Austria's epicurean capital, Graz lie on your varied route; as do the old market town of Bruck and the town of the Montanists and of beer, Leoben. We really recommend giving yourself enough time for this wonderfully exciting ride through Styria. There is so much along the route that is worth stopping off for. You cycle past the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park, a very special natural theatre, reach the impressive Seckau Benedictine Abbey and, in Murau and Leoben, can stop off for informative trips to the famous Murauer and Gösser breweries. Or scale one of the most beautiful gorges in the Alps, the Bärenschützklamm, north of Graz.

Graz itself, with its Mediterranean flair and landmark clock tower, its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Old Town and Eggenberg Palace as well as its many typically warm-hearted cafés, inns and restaurants also lies on your route.

After the state capital, the trail leads through fields in bloom and lush meadows, directly to the south of the state. The "land of wine" begins here. Again, we recommend a few stop-offs to visit special places, such as Kitzeck, Europe's highest wine town, and to enjoy regional delicacies in the wine taverns.  But be careful! The way up to Kitzeck is a short, but exhilarating challenge. The romantic rise in the landscape demands to be scaled.

Back on the main route along the Mur, you go though forests, floodplains and meadows, always towards your goal - Bad Radkersburg - the beautiful historic spa town in the middle of wine country, which invites you to refuel and to reflect on the previous days in the warm spring waters.

On the Slovenian side, you are really spoilt for choice: the left or the right bank of the Mur.  On the left, the Mur floodplains on the edge of the Goricko Nature Park await and, on the right, beautiful vineyards like Jeruzalem. The journey through small villages eventually leads us to the mouth of the Mur near Legrad in Croatia.

Throughout the entire River Mur Cycling Trail climbs are very rare and always quite easily-manageable. Leisure is what defines all three main river cycling trails!
